1. Before you start
- Check that your gym allows filming, and keep other people out of the shot or ask them first. Never film in changing areas.
- Wear fitted clothes if you can, so your knees, hips and feet are easy to see.
- Keep the phone and its stand well clear of the belt and of anyone walking past.
2. Pick your view
Side-on is the view to start with. It shows where your foot lands against your hips, your cadence, your bounce, your trunk, your arms and your head.
Use it for overstriding and a low cadence.
From behind shows both hips and both feet against each other. Use it for hip drop.
From the front shows your knees and arms. Use it, or the view from behind, for knees caving in.
3. Set up the phone
- Stand the phone steady on a tripod or a stand, about level with your hips, a few steps from the treadmill.
- For a side-on shot, square the phone to the treadmill, so the belt runs straight across the screen.
- Frame your whole body, head to feet, with a little room above and below.
- For a rear or front shot, centre the phone on the belt.
Llyr has a Set up the shot screen that walks you through placing, levelling and framing before you film.
4. Run steady
- Warm up first, then run at an easy, steady pace you could hold for a while, for at least thirty seconds.
- Run the way you normally run, without holding the handrails.
- Film a few minutes if you can. A habit that shows up step after step is the one worth working on.
5. Already filmed?
You can use a clip you already have. Import it from your gallery into Llyr, trim it to the part you want, and review it there.
What Llyr does with the video
Llyr follows your whole body, head to toes, and draws a skeleton over your running. A correction has to show up more than once before Llyr flags it.
It measures where your foot lands against your hips, scaled to your own leg length, and counts your steps per minute, both feet.
Your video is processed on your phone and isn’t uploaded to us. Llyr is a second set of eyes, not a coach.
Llyr needs Android 8.0 or newer and a back camera that records at 720p.
